Questions
How do I know which award applies?
Coverage depends on the industry the business operates in and the work each employee actually does — not their job title. Getting the award and classification level right is the foundation of every correct pay calculation.
What's the annualised-salary trap?
Paying a flat salary that's “meant to cover everything” doesn't remove award obligations. You generally still have to reconcile the salary against what the award would have paid, including penalties and overtime — and top up any shortfall.
Is wage theft really criminal now?
Intentional underpayment of wages can be a criminal offence under federal law. There's a compliance code for small business that can offer some protection where underpayments are unintentional and remedied — which makes getting ahead of it valuable.
